How to Wash Dog Clothes Without Shrinking or Losing Their Shape

A practical laundry guide for dog sweaters, everyday clothes and rainwear: read the label, protect fasteners, dry carefully and check the fit.

A sweater can come out clean and still come out wrong: a stretched neck, a stiff cuff or a body that no longer reaches as far as it did before. Washing dog clothes starts with the care label, not the size of the laundry pile.

Keep different garments separate in your mind even if they fit in the same basket. A knit, a decorated shirt and a raincoat may need different treatment. If the label is missing, check with the seller before choosing a cycle.

Before anything goes in the machine

Remove loose hair and dirt, check the pockets or folds, and inspect any trim. Close fasteners that could snag other items. Ruffwear specifically recommends securing zippers, buckles and straps before washing its apparel.

Look for loose stitching while you have the garment in your hands. Washing will not fix a cuff that is already coming apart. Set that piece aside for repair rather than discovering the damage when your dog is waiting for a walk.

Choose the routine for that garment

For washable everyday clothing, Fitwarm recommends gentle washing and careful drying, with the label taking priority. Avoid assuming that a hot wash will improve every result. Heat and rough handling can change the shape or finish of some fabrics.

Use detergent in the amount directed for the load and machine. More detergent is not automatically a better wash. Separate items that might bleed color, and keep delicate trims away from rough, heavy laundry.

Give wet knitwear some support

A small sweater is still knitwear. Follow its fiber-specific care instructions; wool blends and synthetic knits are not interchangeable. Fitwarm's material guide is a useful reminder to treat fabric and construction separately.

When flat drying is suitable for the item, support the wet sweater on a clean towel and gently arrange it into its usual shape. Avoid pulling at the neck or sleeves. Dry it fully before putting it away, and follow the label on whether tumble drying is permitted.

Treat rainwear as its own laundry job

Read the raincoat's instructions for both cleaning and drying. Do not assume that a treatment recommended for one technical jacket is suitable for another. Coatings, linings and fasteners can differ.

If care instructions are unclear, send the seller the product name and a photo of the label. Ask which washing method, detergent and drying method are suitable. That is more useful than a general answer about whether all dog raincoats are machine washable.

Check the fit again once it is dry

Lay the clean garment flat and check the neck, chest, sleeves and closures. You can compare it with measurements or a quick photo taken before the first wash. This is especially useful for a favorite item that you want to keep fitting consistently.

Let your dog try it on briefly. If it now pulls across the chest or changes their stride, do not keep using it just because the size label is unchanged. Our measurement guide explains where to check the dog, while the product's own chart remains the guide for ordering.

Keep a photo of each care label on your phone. When choosing the next piece from our dog clothing collection, consider the laundry routine alongside the fit. Clothing that suits everyday life needs to be manageable after the walk, too.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash dog clothes?
There is no useful schedule for every garment. Check after wear and clean when soiled or needed, following the care instructions. Do not put a damp or dirty garment straight back on your dog.
Can a shrunken dog sweater be stretched back?
There is no reliable fix for every fabric. Ask the maker before trying a stretching treatment, and do not force a garment back onto your dog if its fit has changed.
