How to Measure Your Dog for Clothing
Measure your dog's chest, back and neck in centimeters or inches, then compare every relevant number with the size chart for the specific garment.

To measure your dog for clothing, have them stand naturally on all four feet and use a flexible measuring tape to record chest circumference, back length and neck circumference. Write each result in centimeters (cm) or inches (in), then compare all relevant measurements with the chart on the specific CatMellow product page.
Choose a quiet moment and let your dog move away if they become worried or unwilling. A clothing measurement is never a reason to restrain or force them. You can pause and try again later, or ask another person to calmly offer a treat while you read the tape.
Prepare your dog and measuring tape
Use a soft sewing tape and measure over your dog's normal coat, not over another garment. Keep the tape flat against the body without pulling it tight or leaving a large gap. Your dog should be standing with their head in a neutral position rather than sitting, stretching or curling around to watch you.
Measure each point twice. Record the larger result if the two readings differ, and write the unit beside every number—for example, chest 46 cm or chest 18.1 in. Compare centimeters with centimeters or inches with inches; do not mix units within one size chart.

Measure chest circumference in cm or in
Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog's ribcage, usually just behind the front legs. Check from the side and underneath that the tape makes a level loop. This is the chest circumference, not a straight line across the chest.
Chest room affects how a garment sits around the body and behind the front legs. Keep the tape comfortably close, but do not compress fur or the ribcage to reach a smaller number.
Measure back length in cm or in
Place the start of the tape at the base of the neck, around the point where the neck meets the shoulders. Run it along the spine to the base of the tail. Do not start at the top of the head and do not include the tail in the result.
Back length helps you judge where a sweater, vest or coat will finish. The intended coverage differs by style, so compare the number with the photos and measurements for that exact garment.
Measure neck circumference in cm or in
Circle the tape around the base of the neck where the garment neckline will sit. This may be lower than a narrow everyday collar. Keep long fur clear so the tape follows the body without pressing against the throat.
Not every product chart lists a neck measurement. When it does, compare it alongside the chest and back rather than treating any one number as the whole fit decision.
Read the specific product size chart
Dog clothing sizes are not universal. An S or M in one style can represent different dimensions in another, and breed or weight cannot account for every body shape. Return to the chart on the product you want and compare every measurement that chart provides.
A chart may describe body measurements or finished garment measurements. Use the definition supplied on that product page. If the chart does not say which it uses, contact support@catmellow.com before ordering rather than assuming.
If your dog's chest aligns with one size and the back aligns with another, do not ignore the mismatch. Follow any product-specific between-size guidance and consider whether the style can accommodate both measurements. Ask CatMellow support when the chart does not give enough information for a clear choice.

Check movement after a careful try-on
Try the garment indoors before relying on it for an outing. For a four-leg coat, check every leg opening while your dog walks and turns. The hem should stay clear of the tail and toileting area, and a zip should close without catching fur. Remove the garment if your dog freezes, struggles, changes gait or appears uncomfortable.
If a garment has integrated harness straps, use only the attachment points identified for that specific product and follow its instructions. Do not treat an ordinary loop, zip opening or decorative detail as a leash attachment point.
- The neckline sits without pressing on the throat.
- The chest does not pull when your dog walks or turns.
- Leg openings allow a normal stride without rubbing.
- The back hem, tail and toileting areas remain clear.
- Closures lie flat and do not trap fur or skin.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I do if my dog is between clothing sizes?
- Follow the between-size instruction on that specific product chart. If no instruction is provided, make sure the chosen size accommodates all listed measurements and ask support@catmellow.com when the fit remains unclear.
- Can I choose dog clothing by weight alone?
- No. Weight can be an approximate guide, but dogs of the same weight can have different chest, neck and back proportions. Use the measurements requested by the specific product chart.
- What if chest and back length suggest different sizes?
- Do not select from only one number. Check the product's fit notes and adjustability, then contact CatMellow support if no listed size clearly accommodates both measurements.
- How can I measure my dog without a flexible tape?
- Use a non-stretch string or ribbon, mark where it meets, then lay it flat against a ruler. Avoid elastic cord because stretching can produce a measurement that is too small.
- What should I check after trying dog clothing on?
- Watch your dog walk and turn, check the neckline and leg openings, keep the tail and toileting areas clear, and make sure closures do not catch fur or skin. Remove the garment if movement changes or your dog appears uncomfortable.
